Simplicity is an idea, a principle, a position. The simple is never the result of a banal reduction, but rather of concentration, compression, self-evidence. Simplicity demands differentiation and decision, level-headedness, measure, the ability to recognize. The difficulty of the simple is that it requires lightness; through lightness the complicated becomes simple and infers complexity, making this visible and perceptible. The difficult and the weighty become easy, and the elaborate simple. But lightness itself also calls for momentum and exuberance, it doesn’t happen by itself. The simple is clear, lucid. True simplicity doesn’t make things simple by excluding difficulty, but rather brings everything into play, making unanimity discernible. Simplicity requires courage, only then can it arrive at surprising solutions, at a precise economy of means. The simple is free, without ballast.

Einfachheit ist ein Idee, ein Prinzip, eine Haltung. Das Einfache ist nie Folge einer banalen Reduktion, sondern Konzentration, Verdichtung, Selbstverständlichkeit. Einfachheit verlangt Unterscheidung und Entscheidung, Besonnenheit, Maß, Fähigkeit zur Erkenntnis. Die Schwierigkeit des Einfachen besteht darin, dass es Leichtigkeit braucht; durch Leichtigkeit wird das Komplizierte einfach und erschließt die Komplexität, macht diese überhaupt erst sichtbar, erfahrbar. Das Schwere, Schwierige wird leicht, das Umständliche einfach. Das Leichte braucht Schwung und Überschwang, es drängt nicht von selbst hervor. Das Einfache ist klar, luzide. Wahre Einfachheit macht es sich nicht einfach, indem sie das Schwierige ausschließt. Vielmehr bringt sie alles zusammen zum Tanzen, lässt Einstimmigkeit anklingen. Die Einfachheit braucht Mut, nur so kommt sie zu neuen, überraschenden Lösungen und präziser Verknappung. Das Einfache ist frei, ohne Ballast.
